Moving Tips!

Make your move as smooth and stress-free as possible

Plan Ahead
Start Early: Begin planning your move at least 3–4 weeks in advance. This gives you time to handle all the details without feeling rushed.

Create a Moving Checklist: List everything you need to do, from booking a moving company to setting up utilities at your new home. Check off each task as you complete it.
Declutter Before You Pack
Sort Through Items: Go through every room and sort items into "Keep," "Donate," "Sell," and "Trash" piles. This will reduce the amount of stuff you have to pack and move.

Sell or Donate Items: Host a garage sale, sell items online, or donate things you no longer need to minimize your load.
Pack Smart
Use Quality Packing Materials: Invest in sturdy boxes, bubble wrap, packing paper, and tape. Strong boxes are crucial to protect your belongings during the move.

Pack Early: Start packing non-essential items (like off-season clothes or decor) at least 2–3 weeks before the move.

Room-by-Room Packing: Pack one room at a time, labeling each box with its contents and the room it belongs in. This makes unpacking much easier.
Label Boxes Clearly
Detailed Labels: Write on the box what’s inside and the room it should go to (e.g., “Living Room - Books”). Use color-coded labels for different rooms to make unloading faster.

Fragile Items: Mark boxes with fragile items clearly, and make sure these are packed with extra padding (e.g., bubble wrap, towels, or blankets).
Protect Your Valuables
Insurance Coverage: Check with your moving company about insurance options, and consider additional coverage for valuable items like electronics, jewelry, and art.

Pack Valuables Separately: Keep personal items such as important documents, valuables, and electronics with you rather than in the moving truck.
Take Care of Your Electronics
Disconnect Everything: Disconnect your appliances, electronics, and devices the day before your move. Take photos of wiring setups to help with reassembly.

Pack Electronics Securely: Use their original boxes if you have them, or pack them securely in padded boxes. For TVs and computers, consider using specialized boxes for extra protection.
Don’t Overpack Boxes
Weight Limits: Avoid overpacking boxes. Heavy boxes can be difficult to lift, and they may break or cause injury. Use smaller boxes for heavy items like books and large boxes for lighter items like bedding or pillows.
Take Care of Your Furniture
Disassemble Furniture: Take apart large furniture like beds, tables, and shelves to save space and avoid damage. Keep screws and hardware in labeled bags.

Use Blankets and Padding: Wrap large furniture with moving blankets or furniture pads to protect against scratches or dents.
Moving Day Tips
Pack an Essentials Box: Pack a box with essentials that you’ll need immediately upon arrival—things like toiletries, a few changes of clothes, phone chargers, snacks, and cleaning supplies.

Have a Moving Day Plan: If you’re using movers, confirm the time and details ahead of time. If you’re moving yourself, have a clear plan for loading and unloading the truck.

Stay Hydrated and Take Breaks: Moving can be physically demanding, so stay hydrated, take breaks, and don’t overexert yourself.
Set Up Utilities Early
Transfer or Set Up Utilities: Arrange for the utilities at your new home (electricity, gas, water, internet, etc.) to be set up a few days before you move in.

Notify Your Providers: Notify your utility providers of your move-out date, and schedule final meter readings if necessary.
Keep Important Documents Safe
Keep Documents with You: Keep important documents, such as passports, birth certificates, and financial records, in a safe place during the move. Don't pack them with other belongings.
Hire Professional Movers (If Needed)
Get Multiple Quotes: If you’re hiring professional movers, get quotes from at least 3 companies. Make sure the company is insured and has good reviews.

Check for Hidden Fees: Understand the terms and conditions of the moving company’s pricing structure to avoid unexpected charges for things like stairs, long carries, or extra stops.
Notify Change of Address
Update Your Address: Don’t forget to update your address with the post office, banks, credit card companies, and subscription services.
Take Photos of Your New Home
Document Your New Space: Take pictures of your new home, especially for anything that may need repair or adjustment. This is helpful if you’re renting, as it will serve as evidence of the condition of the home upon arrival.

Bonus Tips for Packing and Moving Efficiently

Clothing: Use wardrobe boxes for clothes on hangers, or roll clothes to save space in boxes.

Books and Heavy Items: Pack books flat to avoid putting pressure on the spines. For heavier items, use small boxes to prevent overloading.

Kitchen Items: Use dish packs or stack plates vertically to prevent them from breaking. Keep kitchen essentials in a single box for easy access when you arrive at your new home.

Furniture Protection: For leather furniture, use a breathable cover (not plastic) to avoid moisture buildup, which can cause damage.
